The Kingdom of Tonga
Tonga (Tongan for "south") is an independent archipelago in the Southern Pacific Ocean. It lies about a third of the way between New Zealand and Hawaii, south of Samoa and east of Fiji. The islands are also known as The Friendly Islands, the name given by Captain Cook because of the friendly reception he received. Tonga is the only monarchy among the island nations in the Pacific Ocean. Tonga's former king, Tupou IV, was once the heaviest monarch in the world, weighing in at over 200 kg (440 pounds) in his prime.
Not widely marketed to South African's this beautiful island will give you the island experience of a lifetime. It's a long way but well worth the effort and a snorkelling paradise.
Summer Rights / Winter Lefts
Ha'atafu Beach Resort is located on the main island of Tongatapu, 21km west of the capital Nuku'alofa on the Hihifo Peninsula. Ha'atafu Beach is not only home to some of Tonga's best surfing waves, it is also Tongatapu's premier recreational swimming and snorkelling beach. The beach features safe all-tides swimming within the expansive lagoon area, which also provides sanctuary to an astounding variety of tropical fish and corals… a true snorkeler’s wonderland. The coastline here faces west-northwest, making the prevailing east-southeast trade winds directly offshore. It is also open to groundswells from winter storm activity in both hemispheres. This unique geographic positioning makes Ha'atafu one of the few surfing locations in the South Pacific to enjoy world class surfing conditions all year round. There are three or four peaks out front of the resort and a couple more within a short boat ride... too easy!
